We survived our first Australia Day, and a lovely day it was. We went to this excellent little fair in a great waterfront park in Geelong.
What we got at the fair, and we weren't sure what to expect, was perfect. Our children could go on almost every ride (that is except the weird Bad Boys II ride with a sweet Will Smith image airbrushed onto it) and all of it was free!!!
The food wasn't free, but it was cheap. There was good coffee (lattes and flat whites at the fair - I LOVE AUSTRALIA)!
For lunch we chose to have sausages and burgers on bread. Yes, bread. They seem to like bread rather than buns here for mass BBQs. It's actually a bit ingenious as it means more focus on the meat, less on the bulk of bread surrounding it. Thank you Australia for first bringing me Crocodile Dundee, and now this!
There was a giant slide, a few twirly things, a rocket ship, bouncy castles, a Harry Potter chamber of mirrors and pony riding. Yes, ponies. Did I mention all this was free? Could the day get any better?!?

You thought that was a rhetorical question, didn't you. Well, the day got better. We went home and headed to the cricket cages. Cormac has graduated from the backyard games and with the fine tutelage of another new teacher on campus (a cricket coach) has got an improved grip and has started stepping into the ball. He plans to take up Mr. Patel's (husband of aforementioned Wendy and Head of School at Brentwood) offer of coaching when he gets back to Brentwood... though Mr. Patel doesn't know it yet.
We then headed over to the Bouvier's house (the same family that hosted us for Christmas dinner) for another BBQ. The food was great and the company even better. We even had a game of bowls between dinner and dessert and were sent home with a gift bag which included a full-sized Australian flag! Lyn and Richard are such incredibly giving people. After the meal we came home loving our new country that much more and jumping just a bit higher... why you ask...
Thanks for a wonderful Australia Day!
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in Nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
“Advance Australia fair!”
AUSSIE! AUSSIE! AUSSIE! OI! OI! OI!
