We spent the last four days just south and west of Geelong, in an area defined as the Otways (I think) and often note-worthy because of the Great Ocean Road. The GOR itself is a pretty neat story. Read wikipedia about its history. The GOR is a beautiful (winding) drive to say the least, and spectacular and breath-taking view are abound. There are stretches of the GOR that are bordered by lengths of sand beach that Canadians would die for - these are virtually unused because of the hundreds of available beaches that are closer to cafes.
By the way, I am going to start defining everything by distance from coffee. Today I needed to figure out the difference between a flat white and a latte. Harold Backer would be very interested in this (though I'm sure he already knows), but the explanation has to do with the interaction between micro-foam and good good crema... I'll stop there because I felt like a bit of a yuppie reading about it.
Back to the trip. Day one was GOR tour de force. The most notable part of the trip (other than the million or so beautiful views) was the stop at the 12 Apostles. They are beautiful. A bit overhyped in ways, but beautiful nonetheless and very geographically/geologically interesting. The pictures taken of Niall show the emotions that the place elicits.
The next day we were off to Tower Hill, a dormant volcano and currently a wildlife habitat for koalas, emus, wallabies and other typical Aussie fauna. Though the koalas seemed to be hiding that day, the emus (from "ema", which means "large bird" in Portuguese) were not.
